Rev. Theodore Feldmann

410-467-0443

Rev. Theodore Feldmann, began his journey in York, Pennsylvania, where he was raised in the Presbyterian tradition with strong Lutheran influences. His father and mother were active as deacons and elders and his grandfather was a Lutheran pastor. Displaying an early interest in music, he began piano study at the age of 8 and study of the organ at age 15.

Ted entered Westminster Choir College, Princeton, NJ, in 1968 and graduated receiving his Bachelors of Music. He served as an organist and choirmaster in Episcopal churches from 1969 through 1983, gaining a reputation as a skilled choral director, pastoral minister and organist.

Expressing an interest in ordination and thwarted by Episcopal Church politics, Ted was received into the Roman Catholic Church and began his seminary studies at Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans. His spiritual director, a wise and insightful Jesuit priest, suggested that Ted’s spirituality and theology were “wilder” than most seminarians and suggested that he read, Original Blessing by theologian, Matthew Fox. The right book at the right time, it lead Ted to pursue a degree in spirituality at the Institute for Culture and Creation Spirituality at Holy Names University in Oakland, CA. After he completed an M.A. in Culture and Spirituality, Matthew Fox asked Ted to stay on as admissions coordinator and instructor in the graduate program. He remained in California for 6 years, completing another graduate degree, a Master of Arts in Pastoral Liturgy, at Santa Clara University, while continuing to teach and minister in music in a Roman Catholic parish.

While enjoying California, Ted felt more at home in the Eastern part of the country. He moved to Baltimore and continued his work as a church musician.

The call to priesthood never left him. Yet Ted was seeking a different approach to ordination than that offered by the mainline denominations. The answer came through conversations with former students from Holy Names University, who urged Ted to investigate the independent catholic movement. After a couple of false starts and odd experiences, Ted found a home in the Catholic Apostolic Church of Antioch, where he earned a Master of Divinity degree from Sophia Divinity School, Santa Fe, NM. He was ordained a deacon in Queens, NY, in 2005 and ordained to the priesthood in 2007 in Baltimore, MD. He founded Beloved Discuple Community in Baltimore the same year.

Along with most other priests and bishops, Ted left the Church of Antioch after the election of a new leader in 2010. He and the Beloved Disciple Community are now charter members of the Ascension Alliance, a free catholic jurisdiction. He serves on the faculty of the Ascension Theological College, teaching the course in New Cosmology, as well as serving as a faculty advisor. He was raised to the level of Monsignor in 2011 by Presiding Bishop, Alan Kemp.
